279 people died in road traffic accidents in 2009

17.06.2010 - In 2009, there were 6,414 road traffic accidents which resulted in bodily damages. In these accidents, 279 people died and 8,057 people were injured. With regards to fatalities, there were 65 cases less than in 2008. Also the number of accidents leading to bodily damage had decreased, as had the number of actual injuries. Read more

Working group proposes mandatory alcolock for young dui drivers

03.06.2010 - Effective monitoring and intervention could provide solutions in order to bring down the number of youth traffic accidents – for instance, instigating mandatory use of alcohol lock in drunk driving cases. This is the main finding of the working group which focused on the traffic safety of young drivers. Punishing fatigued drivers is hard

21.05.2010 - The police need education and proper methods in order to be able to recognise fatigued drivers. According to a questionnaire study published by Liikenneturva, almost all the polled police and public prosecutors considered driving while fatigued to be an uncaring act which causes a traffic risk comparable to DUI. At the same time, they stressed how difficult it is to determine driver fatigue.  Read more

Moped passengers’ injuries climbing

17.05.2010 - The share of moped passengers of all people injured in traffic accidents has increased. In 2009, every sixth victim of a moped accident was a passenger, not the driver. According to a youth survey, every seventh young person could conceivably drive a moped also under the influence of alcohol.   Read more
