LIIKENNETURVA IN BRIEF

Liikenneturva is the central organisation for Finnish traffic safety work. Its mission is to promote the safety of road traffic by influencing people’s attitudes and traffic behaviour. Liikenneturva uses various tools to achieve this: publicising and campaigning, taking care of traffic education with regards to different age groups and providing advanced training for vehicle drivers.

Liikenneturva’s operations are anchored in research information. It has its own research unit, statistics service and a large library from the sector.

Liikenneturva initiates debate about traffic safety issues and makes sure that safety is taken into consideration in all planning and decision-making that concerns traffic. The safety ideology is based on Vision: Zero which states that no one should die or get seriously injured in traffic.

Liikenneturva supports the efforts that are being conducted in municipalities and regions in order to promote traffic safety. The organisation trains public sector personnel and offers PR and traffic education materials for their disposal. Viable operative models, with focus on local work, are developed together with the municipalities and regional authorities.

Liikenneturva is the only national organisation of the field that has traffic safety as its main mission. Liikenneturva operates under the guidance of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Its funding is based on traffic insurance fees. The decision regarding the available funds is made annually by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

Liikenneturva is a joint organisation

The safety of traffic is a result of many factors coming together. Liikenneturva takes care of the preventive traffic education. It operates, through its 55 member organisations, as the central organisation of voluntary traffic safety work. The member organisations represent various road users from pedestrians to heavy traffic associations.

Liikenneturva operates in close contact with the authorities and organisations of the sector. The key partners include Road Administration, police, the municipalities and associations of various fields.
